Zurriola Surf Championship — City of San Sebastián Trophy
11 Oct – 12 Oct 2027
Paseo de Zurriola, Gros
High-level surfing on Europe's best urban wave
The Zurriola Surf Championship is held each autumn when the Cantabrian waves are at their finest. For two days Gros beach becomes the epicentre of Basque surfing.
The competition categories
- Junior category — surfers up to 18 years old. Where national circuit champions are born
- Amateur category — the heart of the championship: surfers from the Basque Country, Navarre and Cantabria
- Professional category — open to European circuit surfers, with national ranking points
- Longboard category — the most elegant of the championship, with classic manoeuvres scored differently
How surf is scored in competition
Judges evaluate each wave using these criteria:
- Wave difficulty — the size and power determine the scoring potential
- Manoeuvres performed — speed, flow and radicality of each movement
- Combination — how manoeuvres are chained together along the wave
- Use of the barrel (when conditions allow) — the highest-value manoeuvre
Where to watch
The Paseo de Zurriola is the best vantage point. The final is broadcast live on online surf platforms and local radio. The Gros beach bar sets up a big screen on final days with a guaranteed celebratory atmosphere.
